"Chandrayaan-4 Mission Confirmed: ISRO Targets Historic Lunar South Pole Rover by 2026"

Chennai, June 27, 2025

In a move that has sparked excitement across India and the global scientific community, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has officially confirmed the Chandrayaan-4 mission — its most ambitious lunar project to date. Scheduled for launch in mid-2026, this mission aims to deliver a next-generation rover to the unexplored lunar south pole region.

🔭 The Mission Vision:

Dr. S. Somnath, ISRO Chairman, announced on Thursday that the Chandrayaan-4 will go beyond its predecessor’s achievements. “We’ve learned from Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3. Now, with Chandrayaan-4, we are planning to establish a longer-duration presence on the Moon’s surface,” he said at the press meet in Bengaluru.

🚀 Key Features of Chandrayaan-4:

Lunar Rover with AI navigation

6-month surface mission

ISRO-developed RTG (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) power source

Collaboration with NASA and JAXA for joint instrumentation

Potential deployment of a mini communication satellite

The spacecraft will carry a 6-wheeled solar rover capable of surviving longer lunar nights, thanks to its improved thermal shielding and autonomous software.

🌍 India’s Growing Space Ambitions:

This announcement comes weeks after India’s successful test of the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), signaling a future of cost-effective and sustainable space exploration.

ISRO also hinted at a Mars Orbiter 2.0 and a possible Venus mission, showcasing India's growing dominance in space tech.

📣 Public Response & Social Buzz:

Since the news broke, the hashtag #Chandrayaan4 has been trending on X (formerly Twitter), with citizens, scientists, and space enthusiasts applauding India’s bold leap into the lunar future.

One user wrote, “We are no longer catching up. We’re leading the way. Proud to be Indian!”
